Man shot during carjacking attempt in Bucktown

CHICAGO — Carjackers shot a man as they tried to take his vehicle on a busy Bucktown street Monday morning, Chicago police said. The offenders got away.

Just after 5 a.m., the 52-year-old victim was standing next to his vehicle in the 1700 block of North Damen when two carjackers arrived in a white sedan. Police said one of the offenders began firing shots, striking him twice in the back.

Officers found three shell casings near the man, who was lying on Damen Avenue.

The robbers fled southbound on Damen in the white sedan without taking the victim’s car, police said. An officer who reviewed surveillance footage described them as two Black males wearing ski masks and black clothing. Investigators suspect the getaway car is a white Hyundai reported stolen on Friday.

EMS transported the victim to Stroger Hospital in good condition.

He is the second person shot in Bucktown and Wicker Park this year. That’s down from three victims at this point last year and up from one as of this date in 2021.

Robberies in the local police district are up 16% over last year and up 55% compared to 2019, according to CPD’s latest CompStat report.
