Shooting leaves man critically injured near Adler Planetarium

A shooting near the Adler Planetarium left a man critically injured overnight, Chicago police said Sunday.

Officers responding to shots fired along the lakefront around 3:40 a.m. found a 19-year-old man lying on the ground near a vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds in the 800 block of East Solidarity Drive.

Police said an unknown man fired shots and then fled the scene. The victim suffered injuries to his lower back, groin, and left thigh. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition. Investigators found at least eight shell casings at the scene.

Cops heading to the scene reported seeing several cars speeding away from Solidarity Drive. No arrests have been made, and police did not release a description of the gunman.

The lakefront area long Solidarity Drive has become a popular hangout spot during warm months. In the past, Chicago police have blocked after-hours vehicle access to the area in late spring and summer.

Three people were shot while gathered in the area on June 11, 2022. A bullet crashed through a window at Adler Planetarium during that incident.

On April 14, a man was stabbed and critically wounded during a fight near the aquarium. Witnesses reported a group of between five and ten people fighting in the area around the time of the stabbing. The altercation was captured on video shared with CWBChicago by @ChicagoCritter:
