CHICAGO — Police arrested the driver of a getaway car used by armed robbers that took a man’s dog at gunpoint on the Near West Side overnight.
Meanwhile, there were more robberies in Logan Square on Thursday afternoon and again last night. No arrests have been announced in connection with those crimes.
The suspect police did arrest sped away from Chicago police and Illinois State Police troopers in a gray Hyundai that had been reported stolen from the 300 block of West Dickens in Lincoln Park. After a lengthy pursuit on city streets and expressways, troopers arrested the driver in West Garfield Park around 2 a.m.
The vehicle had been used about 45 minutes earlier by three robbers who took a man’s puppy dog at gunpoint near the 2700 block of West Maypole. No charges have been announced as of Friday morning.
Logan Square robberies
Armed robbers struck Logan Square early Friday, too. The crime followed robbery sprees that hit the neighborhood on Thursday morning and again at noontime.
At about 12:33 a.m. Friday, a man and woman, ages 22 and 25, were in their car when four robbers pulled up next to them in the 2100 block of North Maplewood.
Armed with guns, the men ordered the victims out of their vehicle and took their valuables, a CPD spokesperson said. The crew left in the same dark-colored vehicle they arrived in.
Three people were robbed during a 20-minute crime spree beginning around 12:30 p.m. Thursday.
The first victim was targeted in the 1900 block of West Ferdinand by three armed men who fled in a silver Kia that had no license plates, according to a police report.
A few minutes later, another man was robbed at gunpoint at PNC Bank, 2300 North Western. At least three armed men were involved. They also traveled in a silver car.
A few minutes later, a man was robbed as he exited his car in the 2500 block of North Drake. He told police that three or four men pulled up next to him in a silver car and robbed him while displaying guns.
Investigators believe they recovered the getaway car around 3:30 p.m. in the 600 block of North Peoria. No one was with the vehicle.
Earlier Thursday, at least nine people were robbed in an hour-long crime spree. Some of those crimes also occurred in Logan Square:
- A man and woman were robbed around 5:15 a.m. near George and Springfield.
- Armed robbers struck a man in the face and took his wallet and phone in the 3500 block of West Medill around 5:25 a.m.
- Another man was physically attacked and robbed near Hamlin and Altgeld at about 5:30 a.m.
- In the 1900 block of North Albany, two men robbed a man of his wallet and phone around 5:40 a.m. Officers said the robbers intentionally struck the victim with a car that had been hijacked a few minutes earlier. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Victims in the morning robbery spree generally described the robbers as Black men in their late teens or early 20s who stood 5’10” to 6 feet tall.
