16-year-olds were part of crew that robbed 4 men at gunpoint in Bridgeport: Chicago police

CHICAGO — Two 16-year-old boys are charged with robbing four men during a single holdup in Bridgeport on Thursday morning, Chicago police said. The pair is suspected of participating in other robberies, but no charges have yet been filed in those cases.

CPD officers partnered with an Illinois State Police aviation unit to track the robbers’ getaway car. Cops arrested the two teens after they bailed out of a stolen Dodge Durango in the 2500 block of West Harrison around 10:38 a.m.

Shortly before they were caught, the teens were part of a holdup crew that robbed four men between the ages of 21 and 62 in the 3700 block of South Lituanica, a Chicago police media statement said. Each boy is charged with four counts of armed robbery with a firearm. One of them already had an outstanding warrant, according to CPD.

The Durango used by the robbers was carjacked from a 34-year-old man in Wicker Park around 2 a.m. Thursday.

Then, around 9:45 a.m., three or four armed men suspected of using the same vehicle committed armed robberies in the 2200 block of North Keystone and the 1800 block of North Cicero. The Bridgeport holdup followed minutes later.

An officer who examined the Durango after the boys were arrested said they saw at least two firearms, gloves, and what appeared to be robbery proceeds inside the vehicle. He also said the crew had swapped the Durango’s license plate with one stolen from a different truck.

Chicago police are battling a 25% increase in robbery reports this year. The increase is largely attributable to groups of armed men who go on robbery sprees while traveling in stolen cars.
