2 Uber drivers among at least 9 robbed during overnight holdup spree

CHICAGO —  Two Uber drivers were among at least nine people robbed during an hour-long armed robbery spree Monday morning on the North Side. No arrests have been made for the crimes, which were committed by up to eight men who traveled in two cars and boxed the victims in, according to CPD.

A Chicago police spokesperson said three people were robbed in the 6300 block of North Artesian around 1:45 a.m. Two men and a woman, all 23 years old, were in a parked car when a black sedan and a white vehicle pulled up.

A group of six armed men got out of the cars and forced the victims from the vehicle at gunpoint. After taking property from all three victims, the group returned to the black and white vehicles and fled, the police spokesperson said.

Minutes later, another man was robbed in a similar fashion in the 2300 block of West Devon. And three minutes after that, another robbery occurred in the 6000 block of North Whipple. At 2:10 a.m., a robbery occurred in the 2700 block of West Rosemont.

At about 2:30 a.m., a 29-year-old Uber driver was in the 4900 block of North Broadway when a black sedan pulled up. Police said three gunmen emerged from the black car and robbed the man, then fled in the black car.

Five minutes later, another Uber driver and his passenger were robbed in the 4800 block of North Broadway. Those victims, ages 32 and 34, told police a white SUV and a black sedan stopped near them and six men emerged from the vehicles with guns. The crew demanded the victims’ valuables and then fled.

The final robbery was reported at 2:45 a.m. in the 6400 block of North Artesian, just one block from where the first holdup occurred an hour before.

In a community alert issued Monday afternoon, Area Three detectives described the suspects as Black males between 17 and 25 years old. The group wore bandana face coverings, black hoodies, and black shoes.

The alert said the two cars used in the robberies were a white 2021 Kia Seltos with license plate EH58247 and a purple 2015 Hyundai with plate DX86882. Both cars had been stolen.
