CHICAGO — Kids left home alone for the holidays. It’s funny in the movies but not nearly as entertaining in real life. Unfortunately, that’s apparently what four Chicago kids, the oldest just 11 years old, have been going through this holiday season.
(Update January 2: Prosecutors have charged Dominique Bishop-Smith, 29, with four counts of misdemeanor child endangerment, saying she left the children home alone for eight days.)
Chicago police officers were wrapping up a domestic disturbance call in the 4800 block of West Jackson around 1:30 p.m. on New Year’s Eve when they were approached by an 11-year-old boy who lives next door.
The child told officers he had been left home alone with other kids and directed them to a second-floor apartment. There, cops found three more children: a one-year-old boy, a four-year-old girl, and a seven-year-old boy, according to a CPD spokesperson.
An officer at the scene said the kids told them their parents left a week ago and never returned. The relationships between the children, who have three different last names, are unknown.
CPD said officers tried to contact a guardian. When that failed, the kids were taken to West Suburban Hospital as a precaution, the spokesperson said.
No one is in custody as Area Four detectives investigate the situation, according to the spokesperson.
