Up to 8 armed men carjacked and robbed victims across Lakeview this morning, police say

CHICAGO — A wave of armed robberies and carjackings rolled through Lakeview on Monday morning, with a group of up to eight men committing a string of crimes, according to Chicago police reports. Most of the holdups occurred in or near Boystown. The victims include a cab driver whose taxi got carjacked.

It all began around 4 a.m. with an armed carjacking in the 4200 block of North Greenview. A 58-year-old man was inside his car when a red SUV pulled up and seven or eight armed men got out, a Chicago police spokesperson said, citing preliminary information.

The crew ordered the man out of his blue BMW X3 and drove away. They tossed some of the victim’s property, including boxes of Christmas decorations, out of the car as they sped through the intersection of Henderson and Southport.

Some witnesses said the offenders may have arrived in two cars, not just the red SUV.

Another man was robbed around 4:15 a.m. near Gill Park at Broadway and Sheridan. He told police that two black cars pulled up and four men, at least one armed with a rifle and others armed with handguns, took his valuables, according to an initial report.

Around 4:30 a.m., two robbery victims walked into the Town Hall (19th) District police station at 850 West Addison to file reports.

The men, ages 27 and 32, were inside a car in the 3400 block of North Broadway when six armed men got out of three vehicles and approached them, the CPD spokesperson said. After ordering the men out of the car, the crew went through the victims’ pockets in search of valuables.

Yet another man was robbed around 4:30 a.m. in the 600 block of West Belmont, just west of Broadway.

Victims generally described the crew members as Black males wearing dark clothing and face masks. One of the robbers was taller than the others, possibly 6’5″ tall.

The final crime occurred a short time later in the 800 block of West Fletcher. A taxi driver told police he was waiting for a fare when two men implied they had weapons and forced him out of his cab. He complied, and they drove away with his cash and the vehicle, a Toyota Prius bearing cab #5069.

It was not immediately clear if the cab-jacking is related to the other robberies.

Another string of robberies was reported Sunday evening in neighborhoods north of Lakeview. That crew physically attacked their victims, some of whom were apparently struck with a club-like device that car owners use to prevent auto theft.

As of last Monday, robbery reports in the Town Hall police district were up 34% compared to the same time last year. Officers assigned to Town Hall patrol the area from Fullerton to Lawrence and the Chicago River to Lake Michigan.
