UIC police report armed robbery near campus, find a gun outside school building

CHICAGO — University of Illinois Chicago police responded to an armed robbery near the school’s campus overnight and later found a handgun nearby outside one of the school’s buildings.

In a message sent to the school’s community this morning, UIC police said the robbery occurred at 737 West Roosevelt Road around 12:35 a.m. The victim, who is not affiliated with the school, reported that the robbery happened after he and the offender exited the same CTA bus.

The robber displayed a gun, demanded the man’s valuables, and then headed south after the holdup, UICPD said.

The school’s email described the robber as “a male, approximately 6 feet, 1 inch, 150-160lbs,  a thin build, wearing [a] puffy dark black jacket and dark pants, approximately 35-40 year[s] of age.” A UIC officer told Chicago police that the suspect was Black and carried a large backpack, but the school did not include those details in its email.

About an hour after the robbery, UIC police found a book bag containing a firearm outside a school building in the 800 block of West Roosevelt, according to a source. Although it was unclear if the robber left the gun and bag behind, a witness claimed to have seen a man who matched the robber’s description board a westbound CTA bus in the area.

UIC’s email said the Chicago Police Department is handling the robbery investigation. The school advised anyone with information about the crime to call 311.
