Kia Boys shoot at man near Wicker Park, bullet lodges in mattress of sleeping woman

CHICAGO — On second thought, maybe he does want to speak with the police.

A man who called 911 overnight to report that he saw someone burglarizing his car told the operator that he didn’t want Chicago police to respond; he simply wanted to let them know. But he changed his tune when the thieves returned and fired a gun at him as he tried to take their picture.

Shortly after 3 a.m., the 47-year-old was inside his apartment in the 1400 block of North Bosworth when he heard his car alarm go off, according to Chicago police. He looked outside and saw his Kia’s rear passenger window was broken. He would later discover that the steering column was peeled, too.

Around 3:08 a.m., he called 911 to give the police a heads-up but said he didn’t want to speak with the officers, according to police dispatch records.

That’s when he saw a black sedan traveling down the alley and decided to take a picture of it, according to a CPD report. Someone in the car saw him and fired a shot in his direction.

The bullet flew through his window and lodged in a mattress where a 44-year-old woman was sleeping, according to police. Neither the man nor the woman reported injuries.

“Do they want to speak to the police now that a round went through their window?” an officer inquired upon hearing the development.

He did. CPD sent an evidence technician to process the scene.
