CTA headphone robbery crew linked to 5 more cases, Chicago police say

Chicago police say a group of young robbers that detectives initially linked to three robberies on the CTA this month may be responsible for at least five more cases. On Saturday night, CPD issued its first community alert about the group, saying some of the robbers may be just 13 years old.

The crew approaches victims from behind and uses force to take headphones from the victims’ heads, police said. Saturday’s alert connected the group to three robberies: in the 1500 block of North Halsted and the 900 block of West Belmont on Tuesday afternoon, March 5, and the next afternoon in the 1500 block of North Clybourn.

CPD updated their alert Sunday evening to include five more cases on CTA trains, buses, and platforms:

  • in the 100 block of North State on the evening of March 2
  • in the 200 block of North State on the morning of March 6 and the afternoon of March 9
  • in the 1700 block of West Polk and the 900 block of West Fullerton on March 6

Sunday’s bulletin said the group includes up to five Black males between 13 and 20 years old wearing dark clothing. Detectives can be contacted at 312-744-8263. Refer to crime pattern #P24-3-018.
