CHICAGO — A West Side man was sentenced on Friday to 19 years in prison for sexually assaulting and robbing a woman inside a West Loop residential building in late 2019.

Melvin Meeky, 31, took his case to a jury trial in January, and the panel returned guilty verdicts on three counts: aggravated criminal sexual assault during the commission of a felony, threatening the life of the victim during an aggravated criminal sexual assault, and robbery.

The allegations stemmed from a random attack in the 400 block of North Carpenter around 5:30 p.m. on December 3, 2019. Meeky followed a 22-year-old woman into the building and asked to use her phone while displaying a knife, prosecutors alleged.

He directed her to a nearby stairwell and forced her to reveal her phone and card PINs. He sexually assaulted the woman in the stairwell after the robbery, then fled when he heard noises inside the building.

Chicago police found a video of Meeky using the victim’s credit and debit cards. Detectives released images of the assailant and asked the public to help identify him. Meeky’s own mother was among several people who contacted detectives with his name and location, officials said in 2019.

Prosecutors pursued an armed robbery charge against Meeky during his trial, but the jury returned a guilty verdict for the lesser charge of robbery. The group also found him not guilty of criminal sexual assault while armed with a weapon, suggesting they were not convinced that the state proved he displayed a knife during the crime.

On Friday, Judge Diana Kenworthy sentenced Meeky. She merged the two sexual assault charges into a single count and ordered him to serve 85% of 12 years on that count, court records show. She gave him seven years for the robbery charge and said he must serve half of that time. Meek must register as a sex offender.
