5-time felon, on parole for gun case, charged with Chicago expressway shooting

CHICAGO — A five-time convicted felon, on parole for being a felon in possession of a firearm, opened fire on another driver during a road rage confrontation on a Chicago expressway, officials say.

It all started on the inbound ramp to the Eisenhower Expressway at Independence around 2:30 a.m. on March 31. The victim and another driver got into a confrontation, and the offender shot at the victim’s vehicle, officials said.

The two drivers continued traveling inbound on the expressway, but the victim crashed into the back of the gunman’s car near Racine, according to the Illinois State Police. According to the agency, the gunman shot at the victim again after the crash and then ran from the scene.

Troopers chased the driver, but he got away. The victim was not injured by gunfire, but he was taken to a hospital for injuries suffered in the crash, ISP said.

State police investigators identified the gunman as Lamont Ross, 31. They located him and took him into custody this week to face a charge of attempted murder.

Judge Barbara Dawkins granted the state’s detention petition.

Ross was paroled last June after serving time for being a felon in possession of a firearm and aggravated battery causing great bodily harm to a peace officer. Both of those cases were filed in late 2020, according to Illinois Department of Corrections records.

His previous prison stings include two years for being a felon in possession of a firearm in 2018 and two narcotics violations in 2012.
