CHICAGO — A 4-year-old boy is in critical condition after being shot as at least two gunmen exchanged gunfire near a McDonald’s in Humboldt Park on Tuesday afternoon.

The boy was riding in a vehicle in the 3300 block of West North Avenue when people in other cars began shooting at each other around 3:49 p.m., according to information from witnesses and Chicago police.

Passersby reported seeing a man firing a rifle through the sunroof of a car while up to three men fired shots while hanging out the windows of another vehicle. Cops at the scene said they found rifle and handgun casings in the middle of North Avenue.

A bullet struck the boy in the back, according to police. The person driving the car he was in took him to Ascension St. Mary Hospital. They quickly transferred him to Stroger Hospital for treatment.

CPD did not announce any arrests. However, officers at the scene said they were detaining three people after recovering a handgun near the scene.
