Robbers attacked victims with pipe, brass knuckles on Friday morning spree: Chicago police

CHICAGO — A violent robbery crew attacked people across the North Side with a metal pipe and brass knuckles while carrying out a holdup spree on Friday morning, according to Chicago police. At least nine people were robbed, and several others reported that the men chased or threatened them.

“I live in Ravenswood. I was assaulted by two Hispanic men [Friday] morning, trying to club me in the back of my head while I was on my walk off of Bowmanville Ave. and Leavitt,” a CWBChicago reader said. He escaped without being robbed. Others were not so lucky.

During each robbery, the men pulled up in a recently stolen gray Hyundai. Two got out to confront the victims, while the third remained in the vehicle. They forced their victims to provide passcodes to phones and also took cash, purses, earbuds, and other items, according to various Chicago police reports.

A source said Evanston police found their getaway car abandoned in the 200 block of Dewey on Friday afternoon.

The spree began when the men took a woman’s purse in the 5800 block of North Hermitage around 8:28 a.m. A couple of minutes later, they took another woman’s purse in the 5100 block of North Oakley.

Chicago police said other women were robbed in the 5300 block of North Damen at 8:30 a.m., the 2900 block of West Catalpa at 8:50 a.m., the 4300 block of West Lawrence at 9 a.m., the 4700 block of North Kasson at 9:08 a.m.; and the 4100 block of North Kedvale at 9:16 a.m.

At about 9:50 a.m., the men beat a woman with a pipe or bat as they robbed her in the 6800 block of North Ravenswood. The 34-year-old woman was taken to St. Francis Hospital for treatment. Doctors used staples to close a head wound she received.

Police said the final robbery of the morning occurred at 10:20 a.m. in the 2600 block of West Jarvis.

In a community alert issued Saturday afternoon, CPD linked the group to a February 4 robbery in the 400 block of West Wrightwood in Lincoln Park. Two victims were robbed by four men who implied they had firearms around 9:04 p.m. that night, a CPD spokesperson told us at the time. The group got a phone and wallet from one man but didn’t get anything from the other.

The alert described the suspects as Hispanic males wearing black hoodies and black ski masks. Area Three and Area Five detectives are handling the investigation. They can be reached at 312-744-8263 and 312-746-7394. The crime pattern is #24-CWP-019.
