Woman mugged in Bucktown, 2 others robbed in West Town on Tuesday morning

CHICAGO — Armed men traveling in a recently stolen SUV robbed and battered three people in Bucktown and West Town on Tuesday morning, according to Chicago police reports. No arrests have been announced.

The first holdup occurred around 5:15 a.m. in the 2000 block of West Superior. Two victims, a 21-year-old man and a 65-year-old woman, were inside a car when a white SUV pulled up, a Chicago police spokesperson said.

Four men got out of the SUV, displayed a gun, and hit both victims in their heads before taking their valuables, according to the spokesperson. The group returned to the SUV and left the area. Both victims declined medical attention.

About 45 minutes later, three men threw a woman to the ground and robbed her in the 1700 block of North Milwaukee. She told police that the group, wearing ski masks, approached her from behind and displayed guns during the mugging.

A witness told police the men escaped in a white Jeep. Cops determined that the vehicle, reported stolen around 5:30 a.m., was also used in the first robbery. The suspects were described as Black males standing 5’8″ to six feet tall and dressed entirely in black clothing.

The crimes occurred in two police districts that were hard-hit by last year’s citywide robbery surge. Robbery reports continue to climb this year in CPD’s Shakespeare (14th) District, which includes Bucktown. Cases are up 24% from 2023’s year-to-date level, sitting at a five-year high, according to the police department’s latest data.

In the Near West (12th) District, robberies have dipped 3% this year, with 149 cases reported compared to 153 at this point last year.
