Registered sex offender robbed, tried to rape woman at CTA station, prosecutors say

Torey Kimble (Chicago Police Department, Zol87)

CHICAGO — A registered sex offender has been detained to await trial after prosecutors said he robbed and tried to sexually assault a woman at knifepoint inside a CTA train station elevator on Sunday. The woman managed to disarm Torey Kimble and escape, officials said, adding that Kimble had a pack of condoms in his pocket when cops arrested him minutes later.

Kimble, an 11-time felon, received his most recent prison sentence in 2021 for sexually abusing and assaulting two female relatives, ages 8 and 10.

In that case, Chicago police responded to the girls’ home and met with one of their fathers, who was “very irate” about the situation, a CPD report said. One of the girls told police that she woke up one night in March 2021 to find Kimble on his knees, touching her and the other girl while trying to pull down and go inside their pants, according to the report. The second girl told officers Kimble had tried the same thing the night before police were called to the house.

Kimble, who was 37 at the time, eventually pleaded guilty to three counts of criminal sexual abuse of a child. According to court records, Judge Thomas Byrne sentenced him to five years on each charge, to be served concurrently. The five years were reduced by 50% for good behavior plus the time he spent in custody before pleading.

Now, prosecutors say, Kimble tried to sexually assault a random woman at the Laramie Green Line station. The victim, 23, was on the platform when Kimble approached her around 7:40 a.m. Sunday. He pulled out a knife and took her phone and backpack, then forced her into the station elevator, according to a detention petition filed with the court.

Inside the elevator, he struck the woman in the face and pulled down her pants, the petition said. Fortunately, the woman gained control of the knife and escaped from the elevator. Prosecutors said she tossed the knife into a trash can and sought help. Kimble allegedly exited the elevator, retrieved the knife, and left.

Chicago cops found him in the area a short time later. They said he had a knife and a package of condoms when they arrested him.

He is charged with attempted aggravated sexual assault and armed robbery. Judge William Fahy granted the state’s detention petition.
