Driver intentionally strikes group during a fight at North Avenue Beach; 1 hospitalized

CHICAGO — The driver of an SUV ran over a woman during an altercation at North Avenue Beach on Thursday afternoon, Chicago police said. A video of the incident quickly appeared online.

Police responded to several calls of fights and other disturbances along the beach in the early afternoon. As the groups lingered, officers remained nearby to monitor the lakefront. Then, at about 3:42 p.m., two groups clashed in a parking lot at the south end of the beach, not far from the boathouse, and the situation turned physical, according to CPD.

Phone video secured by @ChicagoCritter showed several people yelling at the occupants of a black SUV, possibly a GMC Denali. One member of the group struck the SUV’s passenger window with an object, while a second man appeared to punch and kick the glass.

As a third person swings at the window, apparently breaking it, the driver reverses from their parking space and aims at the group. The driver accelerates into the crowd.

A parked vehicle briefly blocks the camera’s view, but when the SUV returns to the screen, it is seen running over someone on the grass. The driver speeds back onto the pavement and races toward the parking lot exit. Police said the driver, who remains at large, headed north on Lake Shore Drive.

EMS transported an 18-year-old woman to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in good condition, a police spokesperson said. No other injuries were reported.

Large fights seem to break out at North Avenue Beach every year when warm weather returns. Late last May, shots were fired on the beach.

On Memorial Day weekend in 2022, police arrested nine men for trying to bring guns through a security checkpoint at the beach. The following month, a man was shot in the face, and three police officers were injured while trying to restore peace at the beach. While CPD released surveillance images of the shooting suspect, no charges have been announced.
