2 robbed while walking in Bucktown, Old Town on Wednesday morning

CHICAGO — Police are investigating two robberies that occurred within 20 minutes yesterday morning in Old Town and Bucktown.

First, three or four men jumped out of a white sedan to rob a woman as she walked in the 1200 block of North Clybourn. It happened around 5:35 a.m. According to a witness, the robbers made a U-turn, then stopped to rob the woman at gunpoint of her bag and phone.

The getaway car appeared to have a broken rear window on the driver’s side. Car thieves often break the rear side windows of vehicles, particularly Kias and Hyundais, to gain entry.

Another robbery occurred about 20 minutes later in the 1900 block of North Hermitage. A man was walking to work when three robbers displayed a gun and took his phone, wallet, and keys, according to preliminary information.

In both robberies, the suspects were skinny Black males in their late teens or 20s wearing black hoodies and face masks, according to officers who responded to the calls.

Robberies reports citywide are flat this year compared to the same time in 2023, but they’re up 28% compared to 2020, according to CPD’s latest data. But your mileage will vary: Robberies are significantly higher in many parts of the city, including the two police districts where yesterday’s holdups occurred.

Reports are up 32% this year in the Near North (18th) District, which is bounded by the Chicago River, Fullerton Avenue, and the lake. The Shakespeare (14th) District, which includes Bucktown, Wicker Park, and much of Logan Square, is seeing a 12% increase this year on top of a significant surge in 2023. Robberies are up 103% in the district compared to 2020.
