Man gets 5-year sentence for 13 burglaries, an attempted armed robbery, and illegal gun possession. He’ll be out in 2½

CHICAGO — A man who allegedly worked with a 15-year-old boy to burglarize bars and restaurants across Chicago last year has pleaded guilty to 15 felony charges. Vernon Edwards received an effective sentence of five years, which will be reduced by 50% for good behavior.

Police believed at least three other people were involved in the burglary crew, but only Edwards and the 15-year-old were caught.

One night, the crew targeted bars and restaurants along Lincoln Avenue in North Center and Lincoln Square. Rather than quit while they were ahead, the crew pressed their luck by continuing to strike businesses as they headed back south.

CPD officers arrived while they were still rummaging through New Archview restaurant, 3480 South Archer. They chased the burglars’ getaway car until it crashed and all of its occupants ran away. Police found Edwards hiding in a yard in the 4400 block of South Troy, a CPD report said. They arrested the 15-year-old nearby, but the other three burglars got away.

Prosecutors initially charged Edwards with five burglaries: Market Square, 4701 North Lincoln; #1 Chop Suey, 2550 West Addison; AT&T, 1724 West Lawrence; Franco’s Ristorante, 300 West 31st Street; and the New Archview restaurant. He received five years for each of those burglaries, except for New Archview, which earned him only three years. He will serve all the sentences concurrently.

He was also charged with attempted armed robbery for trying to rob an employee the crew encountered while burglarizing Roscoe Village Pub, 2159 West Addison. He pleaded guilty, receiving another concurrent five-year sentence.

After filing those initial charges, prosecutors tacked on even restaurant and bar burglaries. Edwards pleaded guilty to all of them. The crimes occurred:

  • in the 900 block of West 35th Street on June 9, 2023
  • in the 4200 block of West 55th Street on June 9, 2023
  • in the 4300 block of West 51st Street on June 16, 2023
  • in the 5200 block of South Archer on June 17, 2023
  • in the 4400 block of South Archer on June 26, 2023
  • in the 5000 block of South Archer on June 26, 2023
  • in the 4200 block of West 55th Street on August 8, 2023
  • in the 6500 block of South Pulaski on September 17, 2023

He received five years for each of those burglaries, concurrent with the other sentences. He also pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, resulting in a three-year concurrent sentence.

Judge Joanne Rosado oversaw the case and issued the sentences.

According to Illinois Department of Corrections records, Edwards is scheduled to be paroled on May 6, 2026.
