CHICAGO — A man who intervened in an armed robbery in Wicker Park is in critical condition after the offenders shot him, according to Chicago police. Investigators suspect Friday’s shooting may be linked to armed robberies reported in the area on Thursday morning.

Police said two robbers jumped out of a car with guns and demanded property from two women in the 2000 block of West North Avenue around 3:49 a.m. A 31-year-old man tried to stop the robbery, but one of the robbers shot him, police said.

CPD officers applied a chest seal to try to slow the man’s blood loss. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition. The robbery victims, ages 33 and 35, were not injured.

At least one surveillance camera recorded the robbery and shooting. Officers said the robbery crew consisted of three Black men wearing masks and armed with at least two firearms. They may have escaped in a silver Infiniti sedan that was reported stolen this week in the West Loop, according to CPD records.

The Infiniti has also been linked to robberies that occurred along Division Street on Thursday morning. In one incident, an Uber driver told police that three or four men confronted him at Division and Marshfield with multiple handguns and took his phone, keys, and wallet around 5 a.m.

He described the group as Black males about 17 or 18 years old wearing black clothing. They were slim, 5’8″ to 5’10” tall, and wore masks.

Coincidentally, a man was shot during a robbery at the exact same address as Friday’s victim on October 15, 2021 In that case, a 55-year-old man was sitting in his car in the alley around 3:45 p.m. when the robber approached and demanded his property, police said at the time The robber proceeded to shoot the victim in the hip and leg No charges were ever filed.

Wicker Park and Bucktown have seen three shootings so far this year, up from one at this time last year. There were three victims at this point in 2022, and one at this date in 2021.

Of the nine people shot in the neighborhoods during all of last year, three were injured during robberies.
