15-year-old carjacked off-duty cop in River North, police say

CHICAGO — A 15-year-old boy has been charged with carjacking an off-duty police officer in River North earlier this year. The boy was arrested Saturday in the 6400 block of South Dr. Martin Luther King Drive, according to a Chicago police media statement.

An off-duty Chicago cop was in the 500 block of West Grand when two carjackers armed with pistols took his red Volkswagen Jetta late on March 26, 2024. He was not injured during the hijacking.

Police said the boy is charged with one count of aggravated vehicular hijacking with a firearm, but no other information is available about him because charges are filed in juvenile court.

As of last Monday, CPD had recorded 422 carjackings so far this year, down from 502 during the same period last year and well below the 702 cases seen during that time in 2022. However, the number of cases is still about double that seen in comparable periods during 2019 and 2020.
