Carjackers busted by cops who followed an AirTag inside the hijacked car: Chicago police

Leonardo Pascual Cabral (Chicago Police Department, Apple)

CHICAGO — Thanks, Apple! That’s probably what a Chicago woman is thinking after cops tracked down three carjackers who followed an AirTag inside her car.

Prosecutors said the 31-year-old drove to the 4000 block of South Richmond to pick up another woman around 10 p.m. on May 29. Moments after the other woman got into the car, someone tapped on the driver’s window with a firearm.

The women got out of the car and the gunman, a juvenile, climbed into the driver’s seat. Another juvenile slid into the back seat. Leonardo Pascual Cabral, 18, took the second woman’s phone from her hand and hopped into the front passenger seat, prosecutors said in a detention petition. Then, they sped away with the victim’s Toyota Corolla.

Police officers met with the two women and quickly began tracking an AirTag that was still inside the car, a CPD report said. They relayed the car’s location to other units, and cops found the hijacked Toyota traveling near the 3600 block of West 61st Street, according to the report.

The driver sped away when the police turned on their lights and sirens, but the hijacked car quickly crashed at 6300 South Kedzie, allowing the police to arrest all three occupants, the report said.

Pascual Cabral faces charges of aggravated vehicular hijacking with a firearm and armed robbery.

Judge William Fahy granted the state’s detention request.
