Chicago man robbed two victims, one 18, the other 81, in under an hour, officials say

Demetrius Boens (Chicago Police Department)

CHICAGO — Prosecutors have charged a Chicago man with committing two armed robberies in about an hour, allegedly targeting an 81-year-old man in one case and an 18-year-old student in the other.

Saying Demetrius Boens has been “continually in and out of prison since he was 16,” Judge Ankur Srivastava this week ordered him held in custody to await trial.

Boens and his accomplice, armed with handguns, targeted an 18-year-old man in an alley in the 2200 block of South Kedvale during the first holdup, according to officials. They got away with the victim’s phone.

In Boens’ detention order, Srivastava noted that the man was a student on his way to school when the robbers physically assaulted and robbed him.

Almost an hour later, Boens and an accomplice robbed an 81-year-old man at gunpoint in an alley behind the 2500 block of South Kolin, according to a Chicago police media release. Officials said the second robbery was caught on video.

Prosecutors charged him with two counts of armed robbery with a firearm.

Boens recently completed parole for an aggravated fleeing and eluding case, a 2022 matter that resulted in a 4½-year sentence.

Court records show Chicago police charged him with manufacture-delivery of cocaine and two other narcotics charges in January of this year, but prosecutors dropped the case on March 5.

He received a 12-year sentence for armed robbery in 2013 and a 4½-year sentence for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon in 2019, records show.
