CHICAGO — A Chicago police recruit suffered a gunshot wound to his back while driving in Ravenswood overnight, police said. The victim’s 21-year-old passenger, also believed to be a male CPD recruit, was not injured.

They were heading west in the 2600 block of North Gunnison when their car was struck by gunfire around 12:13 a.m. One bullet flew through the car’s front windshield, just to the right of the driver’s head. Police said the victim crashed into a parked car after being shot.

Both men fled from the car for safety and called 911. They told police they did not believe they were being followed or targeted. CPD said the injured victim was in good condition.

About 20 shell casings were seen lying in the street on the 4800 block of North Rockwell.

CPD did not release any information about the shooter.
