Purse thief caught on camera in downtown Chicago restaurant

CHICAGO—A surveillance video shared on the Ring network shows a suspected thief rummaging through a woman’s purse in a busy restaurant dining room on Friday evening.

The footage was recorded just before 6 p.m. at a restaurant in the Loop.

As it begins, the suspected thief, wearing a yellow hat, is seen walking across the bottom of the screen. One minute later, he returns and bends over to talk with two women who are dining on the left side of the screen.

But he’s not really interested in speaking with those women. His true intention is to steal valuables from the red purse draped over the chair of a woman seated nearby.

Watch the video and notice his unnatural crouching style and his right hand working the red purse.

About 30 seconds after he started talking with the women, one of them asked the restaurant staff to remove him. The man stood up briefly, and, even though he knew people were on to him, he resumed his crouch and reached for the purse again.

As restaurant workers confront the man, he becomes loud and picks up a glass from a nearby table, apparently to use as a weapon.

Pickpockets and purse thieves are a regular sight in the city’s restaurants, clubs, and transit system. This video serves as a good reminder to always keep purses in a place where you can see them.
