CHICAGO — A CTA bus veered onto a sidewalk in Bridgeport, plowed over a light pole, then sped through a busy intersection where it collided with nearly a dozen vehicles on Monday morning.

Officials have released few details about the crash. However, CWBChicago obtained surveillance video from a city-operated camera that reveals what happened. It’s posted at the end of this report.

The crash occurred around 10:40 a.m. at 35th and Halsted. Five people were hospitalized after the crash, which involved 11 vehicles, according to CPD.

A CTA spokesperson said the bus operator was one of those taken to a nearby hospital after their northbound #8 Halsted bus crashed. Asked if the bus driver suffered a medical emergency, a CTA spokesperson said the agency had no more information, including what led up to the crash.

“We are working closely with CPD and assisting them with their investigation into this matter,” the CTA spokesperson said.

A Chicago Fire Department spokesperson said it transported five people to hospitals and had 12 others decline services at the scene.
