CHICAGO — A couple of contractors were forced to lie on the ground as two armed robbers rifled their pockets and searched their work van for valuables on Tuesday morning. Ring surveillance cameras recorded it all.

The men were working behind their parked truck when it all went down around 9:30 a.m. in the 2700 block of West Washington.

A video shared at the end of this story shows two robbers targeting the workers. The first, extending a gun with his right hand, ran up to the men and ordered them to the ground. The second person walked up more casually and searched the truck interior for valuables.

While the first offender keeps a gun held to one victim’s head, his accomplice bends down, apparently demanding the PIN to unlock a phone.

After taking a leisurely 90 seconds to rob the men in broad daylight on a busy street, the assailants ran from the scene. Witnesses believed they got into a car waiting for them down the street.

Some of the stolen property pinged near 19th and California after the robbery, but no arrests have been announced.

Robberies in the local police district are down 2% this year, but that’s compared to 2023, one of the worst years for robberies in at least a decade. Compared to 2020, robbery reports are up 101% in the Near West (12th) District.
