CHICAGO — An 18-year-old woman turned herself in to Chicago police after her own mother recognized her as one of the people who attacked and robbed a man on the Orange Line downtown. Tamia Washington is the fifth person, but the first adult, to be charged with the robbery, which occurred around 11 p.m. on July 8.

Earlier this week, CPD released surveillance images of eight people who were allegedly involved in the attack on Michael Manning as he rode home from work. Since the photos went public, charges have been filed against an 11-year-old girl and boys ages 14, 15, and 16.

Manning told police that trouble began almost as soon as a group of up to ten young people boarded his train at LaSalle and Van Buren.

“They just pounded on me, and I knew I had to get off this car to, like, not die,” he told Fox Chicago. But the attack didn’t end when he exited the train at Quincy. Police said the group followed him onto the platform and continued the assault, eventually returning to the train and escaping with his debit card.

Washington’s mother brought her to the Central (1st) District police station in the South Loop to turn her in on Wednesday morning, according to a CPD report. The mother saw the police bulleting and recognized her daughter as one of the suspects, the report said.

Judge Caroline Glennon-Goodman detained Washington to await trial on a charge of robbery of a victim over 60 years old.
