CHICAGO — A would-be armed robber is dead, and his accomplice is in Chicago police custody after their victim defended himself with a knife at a South Side gas station on Wednesday morning. Both robbers were on pretrial release for pending felony cases.
It happened at Falcon Fuel, 7602 South Halsted, in Auburn Gresham around 11:14 a.m.
CPD said a 36-year-old man was inside the gas station when two men walked in, pulled him by the hair, and demanded his property.
The victim fought back, pulling out a knife and stabbing one of the robbers in the neck. Police said the 38-year-old died.
His accomplice, 20, pulled out a gun and struck the victim in the face with the weapon, according to CPD, but no shots were fired.
Police located both robbers and recovered a firearm. Charges are pending for the younger man. The older man died at the University of Chicago Hospital.
CPD said the victim was treated at the same hospital for facial injuries.
Officials have not publicly identified the alleged robbers. However, CWBChicago learned their names and found that both have felony cases pending in Cook County.
The man who died has been AWOL for months from a case in which he was charged with driving on a license revoked due to DUI. The younger man is on pretrial release for unlawful possession of a firearm and aggravated battery of a peace officer.
