CHICAGO — A 60-year-old man accused of carjacking an Amazon delivery driver at knifepoint in Lakeview will be released on electronic monitoring after a judge rejected a detention petition filed by prosecutors.
Chicago police said the 53-year-old courier was carjacked just after 7 a.m. on Monday while making deliveries in the 500 block of West Briar.
The hijacker pushed the victim against the side of his Toyota Camry and demanded the keys while placing a “sharp object” to his side, according to prosecutors. CPD’s case report identified the “sharp object” as a knife.
The report said cops assigned to the vehicular hijacking task force started tracking the Camry’s movements through the city’s network of license plate readers. A sergeant working in a covert capacity located the car and watched as William Peterson, 60, parked it in the 7700 block of South Muskegon.
Additional units moved in and arrested Peterson after he got out of the car. Prosecutors said he had the vehicle’s keys with him and added that he admitted to taking the car.
He is charged with one count of vehicular hijacking. Judge Ankur Srivastava presided over his detention hearing on Tuesday.
