CHICAGO — Prosecutors are accusing a man of working with two accomplices to carjack, kidnap, and rob a man this summer while he was on pretrial release for a felony theft case.
In a court filing, prosecutors said two men, one armed with a gun, joined 24-year-old Jontae Baker to carjack a man in the 1600 block of East 50th Street on June 28. But the crew wasn’t satisfied with merely taking the man’s car, according to the allegations.
They forced the man to ride around with them in his 2023 Lincoln Continental as they used his debit and credit cards and made bank transfers, prosecutors said. A camera at one of those banks allegedly recorded the victim sitting next to Baker in the hijacked car as Baker used the man’s debit card at an ATM.
Later, Baker again used one of the man’s credit cards at a gas station, a CPD report said.
Court records show that Baker has been facing a felony theft charge from Dolton since May 2023. Judge William Fahy cited the pending case as one reason he decided to grant the state’s detention petition and keep Baker in jail.
He is charged with aggravated vehicular hijacking, armed robbery, and kidnapping.
