Off-duty sheriff opens fire on armed robbers in the West Loop

CHICAGO — Two would-be armed robbers got more than they bargained for when they tried to rob an off-duty sheriff’s deputy in the West Loop overnight. Their victim pulled a gun and shot at them.

Chicago police said a 24-year-old man was walking in the 200 block of North Morgan when a robber exited a white Ford Expedition around 1:41 a.m. The masked gunman demanded the deputy’s property.

That’s when the deputy pulled out his weapon and started shooting. The robber and a second man, also masked, ran from the area and ditched a handgun as they ran through an alley in the 900 block of West Lake.

No injuries were reported. A witness told police they may have seen one of the robbers run into the Morgan CTA station. So far, though, no arrests have been announced.

Investigators found about 15 shell casings in the area. The robbers’ SUV, reported stolen from New Lenox, was left at the scene.

CWBChicago was created in 2013 by five residents of Wrigleyville and Boystown who had grown disheartened with inaccurate information that was being provided at local Community Policing (CAPS) meetings. Our coverage area has expanded since then to cover Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, Uptown, and other North Side Areas.
