6 years for woman who ordered gunman to shoot victim during a fight on the Red Line

CHICAGO — A woman has been given a six-year prison sentence for ordering her companion to shoot a woman during a fight on a Red Line train in the Loop. Prosecutors said the victim’s school-age son was nearby when the shooting occurred.

Latrice Harvey, 26, pleaded guilty to aggravated battery by discharging a firearm after reaching a deal with prosecutors. They dropped five counts of attempted murder in the agreement.

Prosecutors said Harvey followed the 30-year-old woman and her son onto a Red Line train at State-Lake just after midnight on August 27. For some reason, the woman, Harvey, and an armed man accompanying Harvey all began arguing, and the gunman smacked the woman’s son in the face, prosecutors alleged.

The victim responded by hitting the man and a physical fight broke out. That, prosecutors say, is when the gunman pulled a firearm from his waist. Upon seeing the weapon, the victim’s son and another witness ran from the train.

But prosecutors claimed Harvey cornered the woman on the train and repeatedly punched and kicked her until she fell to the floor. They said she continued to kick and punch the woman as she lay on the ground in a fetal position.

She then instructed the gunman to shoot the victim, prosecutors said. The man took a step forward and shot the victim in the knee at point-blank range. He then ran from the area on foot, as did Harvey. CTA surveillance cameras captured the entire incident.

Judge Timothy Joyce handed down the sentence, giving Harvey credit for the 654 days she spent in custody since being arrested.

The man charged with actually firing the gun, Bobby Noblin, continues to fight the charges in court.
