CHICAGO — An 18-year-old woman is charged with committing two robberies on CTA trains over the past few months after her high school principal identified her, according to a Chicago police report. Men who allegedly helped her commit the robberies have already been charged.
Celeste Pope is detained pending trial on two counts of robbery after appearing before Judge Antara Nath.
The first robbery occurred on a Red Line train at Morse on July 19. Shortly after midnight, four people confronted a 22-year-old Evanston man and proceeded to beat, hit, and rob him of his phone, driver’s license, and credit cards, according to CPD.
Pope is accused of participating in that robbery and spraying the man with a chemical irritant, possibly mace.
Detectives released surveillance images of four suspects within days of the mugging. Earlier this month, prosecutors charged 25-year-old Martel Martin with participating in the robbery after a cop who previously arrested him recognized his photo, a police report stated.
Pope is also accused of joining Zander Glass, 21, to rob a 28-year-old woman on a Midway-bound Orange Line train on October 30. Judge Nath’s detention petition said Pope and Glass robbed the woman of a crossbody purse, ripping it off her body as they rode the train.
Glass was also recently charged with the crime.
