16-year-old was part of robbery crew lurking in online marketplaces, police say

CHICAGO — A 16-year-old boy is one of the armed robbers who’ve lured people into a trap through social media marketplace ads, according to Chicago police.

Last week, the CPD warned about the crime pattern, reporting three identical robberies in the 4000 block of South Oakenwald and the intersecting 1000 block of East 40th Place.

According to police, the victims went to the area with the expectation of purchasing a motorcycle they had seen advertised on social media. When they arrived, an offender directed them to a nearby alley where an accomplice carried out the hold-up.

Detectives on Tuesday arrested a 16-year-old boy in the 6800 block of South Normal on two counts of robbery, according to CPD.

The boy was one of the robbers who held up a 58-year-old man and a 64-year-old man when they arrived to complete a marketplace deal around 3:30 p.m. on November 10, police said.

So far, neither he nor anyone else has been charged with the other two robberies, which occurred on Oakenwald around 6:45 p.m. on October 4 and on 40th Place around 4 p.m. on November 26.
