CHICAGO — A 16-year-old boy is being charged today with shooting and carjacking an Uber driver on the West Side last year, according to Chicago police.
The 49-year-old rideshare driver was arriving to pick up a passenger in the 200 block of North Latrobe when a hijacker slid into the back seat of his Toyota Camry around 9:01 p.m. on June 4, police said. The carjacker ordered the driver out of the car, and even though the victim complied with his commands, the boy shot him in the knee.
The victim walked around the area looking for help, which he eventually received from a passing motorist. EMS transported the victim to Mt. Sinai Hospital in good condition. CPD officers used the city’s now-defunct ShotSpotter system” to locate the crime scene, where several shell casings littered the street.
Investigators arrested the 16-year-old on Monday in the 1100 block of South Hamilton. The county’s juvenile justice center is located on that block, which suggests he has other matters pending before the court.
He is charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery by discharging a firearm, and discharging a firearm during a vehicular hijacking. No other information is available about the boy because he is younger than 18.
