CHICAGO — After five people robbed a woman on the Red Line in September, Chicago police released surveillance images of the suspects and asked the public for help identifying them. In one photo, the defiant suspect looked directly at the CTA surveillance camera, extending his middle finger toward the lens.

Now, a man who resembles the bird-flipping robber has been charged with the crime. David Mitchell, 19, is at least the fourth person to be identified and charged in the case. Prosecutors say Mitchell is on juvenile parole for carjacking and, adjudicated delinquent “multiple” times, he has been the subject of ten juvenile parole warrants.

Mitchell and four other people, including two juveniles, confronted a 19-year-old woman on the 69th Street Red Line platform around 9:38 p.m. on September 28, prosecutors alleged. One of the juveniles pointed a firearm at the woman while Mitchell, 19-year-old Marvell Colone, and the others demanded her property. Colone took the woman’s phone from her hand while others took her bookbag and wallet, according to the allegations.

The juveniles were charged on October 10 and October 12. Marvell was arrested in November.

Chicago cops recently went looking for Mitchell near his home so he could be charged with the robbery. When they found him, he had a loaded 9-millimeter handgun in his jacket pocket, prosecutors say. CPD officers said he told them he “found” the gun in a car.

In addition to the CTA robbery, he is charged with robbing a woman at gunpoint in the 7400 block of South Euclid on September 11, 2023.
