Chicago police need help as they try to identify a driver who killed a pedestrian in West Town last fall. Major Accident Investigations Unit detectives released surveillance images of the vehicle and the possible driver on Wednesday.
According to a CPD crash report, a 69-year-old man was crossing the 1600 block of West Chicago Avenue when a dark-colored sedan struck him around 3:13 p.m. on October 18.
A witness told police that the driver was heading west on Chicago Avenue when he struck the victim in a bus lane, outside the crosswalk, according to the report. It said the responsible driver pulled over and waited with the victim until EMS arrived.
The victim was initially listed in serious condition, and he was able to speak with police and confirm details of the crash, the report said. It also stated that the victim “had no loss of limbs or life threatening injusries [sic].” However, the man died two days later from blunt force injuries to his head and neck that he suffered in the crash, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.
According to CPD, the driver’s vehicle may have been a black or blue Mercedes. Police said the front end and windshield probably received damage in the collision. The driver was a Black male in his mid-30s who stood about six feet tall and weighed 220 to 230 pounds.
