CHICAGO — A Chicago man is charged with shooting another driver as they traveled on the Stevenson Expressway nearly a year ago, according to the Illinois State Police. Steve Turner, 30, was released from custody on Wednesday after Judge David Kelly rejected the state’s detention petition, court records show.
Turner and the other driver were heading inbound near California Avenue when the incident occurred around 6:37 p.m. on March 25, 2024, officials said. Turner pulled out a gun and fired through the other vehicle’s rear window, striking its driver in the back shoulder area, according to the state’s detention petition. The bullet fractured the victim’s shoulder and lodged in his shoulder blade, the petition said.
ISP said its agents conducted “an exhaustive investigation” that led them to the gunman’s vehicle and Turner. He is charged with aggravated battery by discharging a firearm.
While Kelly decided to let Turner go home rather than sit in jail, the judge also ordered Turner to stay in the house 24 hours a day.
Court records show Turner received probation for a 2021 felony gun possession case.
