CHICAGO — For nearly six minutes, Chicago police officers trailed an armed burglary suspect, engaging him in multiple shootouts, the last of which ended with the man lying dead in a North Lawndale alley, according to CPD and police radio transmissions. The final moments of the incident were caught on video.
Officers initially responded to a landlord’s 911 call about a man on a ladder trying to climb into an apartment window in the 1800 block of South Central Park around 10:48 a.m. Sunday.
Just four minutes later, an officer announced on the radio that he saw the burglar in an alley with a firearm. This eight-minute audio clip contains the unedited radio traffic that followed.
Officers said they saw the man jumping a fence and later declared a “10-1” police emergency, saying shots were being fired.
The tense encounter ended at 10:58 a.m., near the intersection of 18th and Millard. Video initially tweeted by @CPD1617Scanner shows how it ended: Shots are fired and officers run for cover in a vacant lot. As the suspect walks into view in the alley behind the lot, there is a barrage of gunfire, and he falls to the pavement.
“I think I shot the offender!” an officer shouts into his radio. “He’s down! He’s down!”
Here is the video. While it is not graphic, it does show the suspect being shot and falling in the distance.
CPD released a media statement with its preliminary findings:
