CHICAGO — Weeks after Chicago police released surveillance images of a suspect wanted for five burglaries near Union Station, charges are being filed. Terrance Shorts, 30, facing five counts of felony burglary, had six active arrest warrants when cops picked him up Monday in the 5400 block of West Lake, according to CPD.
Late last month, detectives released a video clip of a man who allegedly broke into five businesses, mostly along Clinton Street, on January 27. They said the prowler pried open the front doors of the businesses and took cash from their cash registers.
His first break-in was in the 500 block of West Lake around 1:40 a.m. Then he moved to Clinton Street, hitting a shop in the 100 block of South Clinton at 1:56 a.m., followed by two businesses on the 100 block of North Clinton between 2:04 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. At 3 a.m., he targeted two more locations in the first block of North Clinton, according to CPD.
Burglaries of businesses have been a big problem across the city, particularly downtown and on the North Side. Police have released countless alerts about different crews and individuals responsible for the break-ins.
While some of the crimes involve seemingly organized teams targeting high-end merchandise or safes, most burglars get away with small amounts of cash from registers. Many business owners say they lose more money repairing the damage burglars inflict on their doors and windows than they do to stolen property.
