CHICAGO — A 15-year-old boy has been charged with murdering the 16-year-old girl who was found dead in a West Side park last week, according to Chicago police. Homicide investigators arrested the boy Sunday in the 4000 block of West Barry.
Because the boy is 15, his case will remain in the juvenile court system, which is shielded from public view.
Around 4:50 p.m. on Monday, March 17, a passerby found Kaylah Love’s body near the playground at Horan Park, 3035 West Van Buren. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office determined that Kaylah had been beaten and stabbed in the head, officials said.
The woman who found Kaylah told police that she called 911 on Sunday evening upon seeing a man beating a woman in the same spot where Kaylah was discovered. She believed Kaylah was the person she saw being attacked.
At least two CPD units responded to the park, but they did not see anyone fighting, and the assignment was “coded out,” meaning the incident did not need to be documented with a written report. CPD is now conducting an internal review of the department’s response to the initial 911 call.
Kaylah’s family last saw the Manley Career Academy sophomore last Sunday when she told them she was going to McDonald’s. They reported her missing when she did not return home.
