4 years for Logan Square carjacker who accidentally left brother’s phone at crime scene

Jacobie Jackson (Chicago Police Department)

CHICAGO — A carjacker who got caught mainly because he accidentally left his brother’s phone at the crime scene was handed a four-year prison sentence on Wednesday.

Jacobie Jackson, 21, “randomly ambushed” the 36-year-old victim at the Shell service station, 3959 West Fullerton, early on January 13, 2024, officials said. Chicago cops reported that he admitted to the crime after they took him into custody a couple of weeks later.

The victim stepped inside the service station and looked out moments later to see Jackson pounding on the back window of his 2003 Chevy Malibu. He ran outside to confront Jackson, who threatened to shoot him if he didn’t give up his keys, prosecutors said, but no gun was seen.

Prosecutors said the victim fought with Jackson and fell to the ground, giving Jackson a chance to get behind the wheel of his car and drive away. The victim suffered “soreness from strikes to the head” but was not seriously injured, police said in a case report.

Surveillance cameras recorded it all, including the part where Jackson dropped a cellphone, the petition said. Chicago cops recovered the device and traced it to Jackson’s brother, who told them he gave it to Jackson.

Jackson “admits to fighting with the victim and taking his car by force,” the cops wrote in his arrest report.

Yesterday, Jackson pleaded guilty to vehicular hijacking in exchange for the four-year sentence from Judge Arthur Willis, according to court records. The sentence will be reduced to two years with good behavior, and it will be reduced by another 436 days for the time Jackson spent in jail since being arrested. He should expect to be paroled in a little over nine months.
