Armed robbery crew includes a gunman wearing a screeching ankle monitor, victims say

CHICAGO — It’s not every day that robbery victims report that one of the guys who held them up at gunpoint wore an ankle monitor that emitted a wailing alarm. But here we are.

That detail was provided to Chicago police Tuesday morning as an armed crew swept through West Town neighborhoods, including Logan Square. It was the second day in a row that the area experienced a string of armed hold-ups. Cops think the same group committed most, if not all, of the crimes.

The first robbery on Tuesday morning occurred near Richard Yates Elementary School, 1839 North Richmond. A man told police that two armed robbers got out of a dark sedan and took his keys, wallet, and book bag at gunpoint around 5:40 a.m., according to preliminary information.

He described the suspects as Black, wearing black ski masks with black sweatsuits or joggers and armed with pistols that had extended magazines.

Three people were robbed at gunpoint shortly before 10 a.m. near the intersection of Albany and Diversey. Two robbers got out of a gray sedan, displayed guns, and took the victims’ phones and wallets. They tried to take their truck, too, but failed.

The victims offered descriptions that were similar to the first robbery but noted that one of the men was wearing an electronic monitoring bracelet, which was emitting an alert.

At about 10:25 a.m., a 911 caller reported two masked men in a gray sedan pulled up on them in the 2200 block of West Huron. But they ran away before the men could rob them.

However, another victim was not so lucky in nearby Smith Park, 2526 West Grand. They told police that two masked men wearing black clothing got out of a gray sedan and took their valuables at gunpoint.

The victim noted that a third person stayed in the getaway car and said both gunmen, who wore gloves, had pistols with extended magazines.

On Monday afternoon, a 70-year-old man fell victim to a similar robbery in the 1900 block of West Huron. And a 25-year-old man was robbed similarly in the 800 block of North Wood.
