CHICAGO — Two men have been jailed pending trial after prosecutors accused them of robbing a UPS driver, hoping to get away with the courier’s iPhone packages.
Officials said the driver was inside his truck in the 800 block of North Spaulding when Trevon Walker, 23, and Dequan Kennedy, 24, confronted him inside the vehicle around 9:55 a.m. on February 17.
“Back away or this is gonna get ugly,” Kennedy allegedly threatened. The men ordered the UPS driver to check his deliveries for any that contained iPhones, prosecutors said, and they eventually fled with about 30 packages.
Chicago cops learned that the robbers escaped in a blue car that had been reported stolen and also determined that the vehicle was involved in a shooting in the 7400 block of South St. Lawrence the same day, according to court filings. The shooting did not result in any injuries, but according to a CPD report, the gunfire caused “extensive damage” to a residence.
Investigators eventually found the car and CPD, the Illinois State Police, and multiple suburban police departments pursued the car through the southwest suburbs until a state trooper disabled the vehicle with a “PIT maneuver.”
Officers arrested both men at the scene, although a Chicago Heights police officer tased Walker first, CPD’s report said.
Prosecutors said the cops found stolen packages in the crashed car and accused Kennedy of having an unloaded AK-47 and a loaded handgun with an extended magazine. Walker, who was on first-time weapon offender probation for a felony gun case, allegedly had $1,658 in cash.
Both men are charged with robbery. Kenedy faces two additional counts of unlawful possession of a firearm.
