CHICAGO — An 86-year-old man is critically injured and unlikely to survive after a woman pushed him to the ground because he was leaning on her car in Chinatown, officials said.
“I’m sorry for pushing the old man,” Janet Yu, 48, allegedly told Chicago police officers when she returned to the scene shortly after she pushed the man. Prosecutors said video cameras were rolling when the woman confronted the man in the 2400 block of South Wallace around noon on April 3.
A witness also told police that he saw Yu push the octogenarian several times, causing him to fall and strike his head. The witness provided police with video that showed Yu becoming irate, striking the man, and driving away in her black Acura, a CPD report said.
Officers said the victim was unconscious when they saw him being taken to Stroger Hospital.
Yu returned while police were on the scene and apologized for pushing the man, the report said.
“What’s going on with him now?” Yu allegedly asked. Cops said she also admitted to getting into an argument with the man for leaning on her car.
Judge Ankur Srivastava ordered Yu detained pending trial, saying she struck a “clearly frail [and] vulnerable victim” over a “trivial dispute.” Prosecutors told Srivastava that the victim, who became paralyzed from the neck down and remained unconscious and on a ventilator, was not likely to survive.
Yu is charged with aggravated battery of a person older than 60 and aggravated battery causing great bodily harm.
