Car burglars are staking out fitness center parking lots across the NW Side, police say

Attention gym rats: Somebody is targeting cars in fitness center parking lots on the Northwest Side. Chicago police have issued a community alert about the crime pattern, which started in January and seems to be picking up steam.

According to the alert, car burglars are casing gym parking lots, waiting for people to exit their cars and head inside for a workout. Once the victims are inside the building, the burglars break their car window and steal anything of value.

CPD has publicly linked four crimes to the pattern, but there may be many more. The known burglaries occurred in the 3400 block of West Addison at 1:45 p.m. on January 11 and again at 7:30 p.m. on April 14; in the 2100 block of North Pulaski at 9 p.m. on April 7, and in the 4900 block of West North Avenue at 5:45 p.m. on April 16.

The alert said one or two men have been carrying out the burglaries. One has a dark beard and has been seen wearing a black durag with a black shirt featuring a goat design.

Area Five detectives are in charge of the investigation. They can be reached at 312-746-6554 regarding crime pattern #P25-5-013CA.

CWBChicago was created in 2013 by five residents of Wrigleyville and Boystown who had grown disheartened with inaccurate information that was being provided at local Community Policing (CAPS) meetings. Our coverage area has expanded since then to cover Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, Uptown, and other North Side Areas.
