Father kidnapped his own 2-month-old, tossed her over a fence during getaway attempt: prosecutors

Nickolas Watts (Chicago Police Department)

A 19-year-old father has been jailed on allegations that he kidnapped his two-month-old baby and tossed her over a fence in Edgewater.

Prosecutors said Nickolas Watts got into an argument with the 18-year-old mother of his child at the Granville Red Line station around 12:23 p.m. Friday.

During the altercation, Watts allegedly snatched the girl from her stroller, causing the argument to turn physical, officials said. Prosecutors claim Watts got away after kicking the woman in her face.

Witnesses told police Watts tossed the baby over a fence and then jumped over it to continue his getaway. Police recovered the baby and arrested Watts around 12:44 p.m. in the 1000 block of West Glenlake.

Officials said the baby is recovering from fractures received during the incident.

Judge Sabra Lynne Ebersole detained Watts at the state’s request.

Ald. Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth (48th) said Loyola University Police helped CPD with the initial 911 call.

Last April, Calumet City police arrested Watts on a domestic battery charge after the same woman claimed that he punched her, according to public records. Prosecutors dropped the matter when the woman failed to appear in court a month later, court records show.
