A Chicago police officer was shot and a suspect was killed during a physical struggle following an investigatory stop on the city’s West Side last night, authorities reported. (Update: The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the man as 19-year-old Nathaniel Fejerang.)
According to a Chicago Police Department statement, the incident began around 10:37 p.m. when officers attempted to stop a man for investigation in the 4300 block of West North Avenue. The man fled, prompting a foot chase, CPD said.
During the struggle, the suspect’s firearm discharged, striking an officer in the leg, the statement said. An officer then fatally shot the suspect. Police recovered a firearm at the scene, according to CPD.
The injured officer, initially in serious condition, has been stabilized.
Audio from the Grand Central (25th) District police radio channel indicates the situation escalated rapidly. A sergeant was heard instructing another unit to join him in the area where the shooting was about to occur. Within moments, an officer announces that shots had been fired.
The radio traffic offers very little additional information about what led up to the investigatory stop and shooting.
Here’s an unedited 10-minute excerpt of the audio:
Officers involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative duties for at least 30 days per CPD policy. The Civilian Office of Police Accountability said its investigators were responding to the scene.
