Crowd beats, robs community safety liaison in Gompers Park

Adolfo Agreda (Chicago Police Department, Chicago Parks District)

A community safety liaison was beaten and robbed by a group of people as he patrolled Gompers Park on the Northwest Side, prosecutors said as they filed charges against a man accused of participating in the beating.

The victim was video recording people in the park, 4222 West Foster, in his role as a safety liaison on the afternoon of May 12.

Prosecutors say Adolfo Agreda, 41, who admitted to drinking all day, did not appreciate being filmed.

Agreda allegedly admitted that he and “a bunch” of other people physically attacked the community safety advocate, striking the 50-year-old with fists and legs until he fell to the ground.

While the man was down, the group tried to take the victim’s phone from his hand, and Agreda allegedly snatched a silver-plated necklace from the safety liaison’s neck.

Police arrived to find the victim “bleeding profusely from his mouth, nose, and arms,” a CPD report said. He pointed toward Agreda, seated on a lawn chair near the basketball court, and said, “That’s him!”

The victim’s companion confirmed Agreda was involved in the attack, but they said they could not see Agreda snatch the necklace because the safety liaison was lying on the ground, according to the CPD report.

Judge John Hock detained Agreda on a charge of robbery and misdemeanor battery.
